This hike will be on the A.T. from Petites Gap on the Blue Ridge Parkway to the
Sunset Field overlook on the BRP. Included are wonderful views from Thunder
Ridge Overlook and Apple Orchard Mountain, which has a large grassy bald at its
summit. This route is also known for the Guillotine, a rock formation, where
the trail passes under a suspended rock. There is also a beautiful series of
over 100 rock steps installed by the Natural Bridge Appalachian Trail Club
along the trail immediately past the Guillotine. There are 1,400 feet of
elevation gain on this hike.
