This hike will start at the Elk Garden AT crossing at VA-600 in the Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area and head south on the AT The hike will climb 800 feet to near the summit of Whitetop Mountain, the second highest peak in Virginia at over 5,500 feet.  From there it will pass through a scenic mountain bald to Buzzard Rock, with magnificent views of southwest Virginia and eastern Tennessee.  The hike will then descend some 2,100 feet to route 58, near Damascus.
